Indications
To reduce the production of drug-resistant bacteria and to ensure the effectiveness of levofloxacin lactate and other antibacterial drugs, levofloxacin should only be used for the treatment or prevention of infections that have been demonstrated or are highly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. The results of bacterial cultures and drug sensitivity tests should be considered when selecting or modifying an antimicrobial drug regimen. If data from these tests are not available for reference, empiric treatment should be based on local epidemiology and pathogen susceptibility.
Bacterial cultures and drug sensitivity tests should be performed prior to treatment to isolate and characterize the infecting pathogen and determine its susceptibility to levofloxacin lactate. Treatment with levofloxacin can be initiated before the results of these tests are obtained, and appropriate treatment can be selected after the test results are obtained.
As with other drugs in this category, some strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa can quickly become resistant to treatment with levofloxacin lactate. Bacterial cultures and sensitivity tests should be performed periodically during treatment to determine whether the pathogenic bacteria are consistently susceptible to antimicrobial drugs and to detect resistance when it develops.
Levofloxacin Lactate Oral and Injectable preparations may be used to treat the following mild, moderate, and severe infections in adults (≥18 years of age) caused by susceptible strains of the bacteria listed below. Levofloxacin Lactate Injection may be used when intravenous administration is more favorable (e.g., patient cannot tolerate oral administration, etc.).
1. Hospital-acquired pneumonia
2. Community-acquired pneumonia
3. Acute bacterial sinusitis
4. Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
5. Complicated skin and skin structure infections
6. Uncomplicated skin and soft skin tissue infections
7. Chronic bacterial prostatitis
8.Complicated urinary tract infection
9. Acute pyelonephritis
10. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections:
11. inhalational anthrax (post-exposure)
